Very nicely done and very basic ecommerce app. Could be expanded into just about anything a final customer wants.

Some judicious use of AJAX could really jazz up the admin pages though.

On the checkout page there are two buttons on the bottom. One says "process" and the other says "comp"..

I used "comp" and the order was processed.

Is "comp" short for "complete"????

Thanks for the positive feedback.

There is minimal AJAX in the admin pages but more will be coming shortly. Right now we're focusing on the basics (data model in particular) before we start fiddling with AJAX.

"Comp" is short for "Complimentary." This is a way for the store owner to send out free stuff to a customer without charging anyone's credit card and without throwing off your sales totals. The order is still generated but it has a special status. Note that you will only see the comp button when logged in as an admin.

OK.. thanks for the info Sean.

Finishing up the basics before fiddling with ajax is a good plan.

One of the brutal realities of this business is that no matter what functionality you have in an app even the most novice user seems to be able to suggest something new to add.

I'll keep watching this one for updates.

Spree Details

The goal of the project is to build a complete open source commerce solution for Ruby on Rails. The Rails commerce space is immature and is lacking serious solutions for developers looking for answers to their complex business needs. Rails is especially problematic because it is a relatively new technology and suffers from “small project mentality.” Most open source projects in Rails are maintained by a single individual and tend to be limited in scope. Spree seeks to create a large and healthy open source community of the type that developers of other languages are used to participating in.

The founder of Spree was motivated to start the project after failing to find an existing community in the Rails space dedicated to this vision. In addition, he was motivated by unsuccessful efforts to use other open source solutions in other programming languages, including (but not limited to) the infamous OS Commerce. These solutions seemed to be unsatisfactory when presented with even the simplest of use cases.
